Background
The Communications cluster in the Zimbabwe Country Office (ZCO) continues to be relied upon in the process of planning; development and delivery of UNICEF’s external communications. The communications section works at using strategic information on women and children to enable Government and civil society in development planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Through close collaboration with the local and international media, the communications team also helps to ensure information sharing, awareness and knowledge on the situation on women children and women in Zimbabwe to local and international communities. A Communications Consultant is needed to assist with the ZCO advocacy assignments on issues affecting the children and women of Zimbabwe. A dedicated Communications Consultant with the ability to write and effectively communicate on UNICEF supported interventions in Zimbabwe is required for the period April 2012 – December 2012. The communications materials produced will be used on the UNICEF Website as well as used in advocacy packs for donors and other partners.

Objective(s)

The Communications Consultant will work towards highlighting the level of change that UNICEF Zimbabwe Country Office has effected on different needing groups, in the process acknowledging the support of the relevant donors for the programmes. Further to the use of the traditional print and electronic media forms, the Communications Consultant places an important role of managing the ZCO website, and ensure that messages are also shared using the new age media forms.

Methodology & Expected Output

• Maintenance of the ZCO website • Production of electronic and print advocacy materials in support of UNICEF supported programmes • Arrangement and management of advocacy events • Ensuring donor visibility • Preparation of background information, fact sheets and speeches communication and other promotional materials • Distribution and dissemination of advocacy materials
• Media support through organising field visits and media training events; photo coverage and TV Footage

Consultancy Requirements

• Advanced degree or first level university degree in communication, journalism or public relations combined with equivalent professional experience • Fluency in English • Knowledge of current theories and practices in Mass communication and Journalism, research, planning and strategy, and the role of mass media. • General ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form; specific skills in writing press releases and articles/stories for traditional, electronic and new media. • Proven ability to conceptualize, plan and execute ideas, as well as impart knowledge and teach skills. • Proven ability to effectively manage relationships with media representatives, government officials and other UNICEF/UN partners. • Knowledge of computer systems, internet navigation and various office applications, specifically interactive digital media.
