CARE started operations in Zimbabwe in 1992. CARE Zimbabwe directly operates in three provinces in Zimbabwe, Harare, Masvingo and Midlands and through partners operates in three other provinces. CARE Zimbabwe currently operates nine [9] offices in Zimbabwe. The Country Office is located in the capital city, Harare, at 8 Ross Avenue, Belgravia, one sub-office in Masvingo (Masvingo town) province and nine district offices located in Bikita, Chivi, Zaka, Mwenezi, Mberengwa, Gutu, Gokwe South, Gokwe North, and Chiredzi. CARE’s programme promotes sustainable livelihoods of poor and vulnerable people with a focus on micro-enterprises in the informal sector, agriculture, helping HIV/AIDS-affected households, reducing malnutrition, community-based health education, and helping orphans and vulnerable children..
CARE’s work in Zimbabwe began as a response to a severe 1992 drought that threatened the nation’s food security and left millions in need of food aid. In a country where many of the people are subsistence farmers, CARE quickly distributed food throughout the nation, establishing itself as a valued partner in Zimbabwe.
Today, CARE works to promote sustainable programmes that help people acquire the financial stability and skills they need to prepare for, and survive, disasters such as the 1992 drought. Over the past 24 years, CARE’s major initiatives in Zimbabwe have focused on agricultural and natural resources, emergency drought assistance, small economic activity development, and health and nutrition.
CARE works in Midlands (North and South), Masvingo, Manicaland and Mashonaland provinces with some urban operations in Chitungwiza.
