Africa University, an International Pan African and United Methodist Church Related Institution in Zimbabwe, invites applications from suitably qualified and well experienced persons to fill the following strategic positions:

The Project
Africa University's Institute of Peace, Leadership and
Governance (IPLG) is launching a programme to facilitate the contribution of Eminent Persons to leadership development, conflict prevention and peace building through seminars, conferences and public lectures. The intended immediate beneficiaries of the programme are university students and staff, and civil society in Africa. Eminent Persons stands for that category of leaders who are former Heads of State and Government, other former public figures, former and practicing Heads of regional and international organizations and senior religious leaders. Personalities in other influential positions of leadership will also be invited to contribute to activities designed to promote knowledge and develop skills in conflict prevention, peace building and leadership development.
The African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) has provided a grant to support the organization of seminars, conferences and lectures involving the participation of eminent persons to address challenges of peace, leadership, governance and development in Africa. The goal of the Project is the strengthening of the capacity of IPLG to implement programmes designed to enhance opportunities for particular groups of African leaders to contribute to African development through research, debate and analysis of contemporary issues. Its objective is to provide' a framework for the mobilization of the intellectual and moral support of particular categories of leaders in society to contribute to programmes at Africa University. The Project will involve the participation of eminent personalities, as discussion leaders at seminars and conferences, and as guest speakers at University events.
The University seeks to appoint qualified professionals for the following positions:

1. Programme Coordinator
2. Finance Officer on contract

These positions will function as part of an interdisciplinary management structure of the Project and shall become effective subject to the availability of the grant.


1. Programme Coordinator
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the authority of the Vice Chancellor, and reporting to the Director of the Institute of Peace, Leadership and Governance, the incumbent will be assigned the following responsibilities:
Ensure smooth organization, implementation and coordination of the activities and logistics of the Project;
Prepare activity details, inputs and budget for each planned Event in the Project;
Prepare bi-annual and other reports on the implementation of the Project;
Develop a data base of appropriate institutions, organizations and personalities to be considered for involvement in the project;
Serve as Secretary of the Programme Steering Committee and provide organizational and logistical support to its meetings;
Carry out other functions as assigned.

Qualifications and experience required
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:
A university degree (a Masters or doctoral degree an advantage) in the area of project management, Public administration, political science, governance or relevant field;
Interest in working in any of the relevant areas including education for peace, leadership development, political and economic development in Africa;
Experience in a senior leadership, managerial or academic position, in the public and/or private sector environment, or international development cooperation context;
Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing training programmes in leadership and management in the public, private and civil society sectors;
Knowledge of contemporary political, social and economic development challenges in Africa;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; working knowledge of French or portuguese an advantage


2. Finance Officer
This position involves the maintenance of accurate accounting records and the preparation of periodic reports for final decision making and control of IPLG's income and expenditure function. This position will become effective subject to the availability of the grant.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the authority of the Vice Chancellor, and reporting to the Director of the Institute of Peace, Leadership and Governance, the incumbent will be assigned the following responsibilities:
Maintaining cash books, bank reconciliation statements and computer data for all financial transactions
Preparing periodic final accounts and reports for Director to the Bursar and Project Donors/Partners
Assisting the IPLG Director in the preparation of the Institute's budget
Preparing monthly financial accounts
Checking and authorizing vouchers for payment
Updating the IPLG Director on budget balances on Expenditure items monthly.
Attending financial meetings as directed by the IPLG Director or on behalf of the Director
Reconciling main ledger items
Preparing projects payments/disbursements and reconciling the same for the IPLG Director.
Implementation of financial policies and guidelines as guided by the Bursar of Africa University
Operate and maintain an accounting system which optimizes the mobilization and application of financial resources of the Institute
Initiation and organization of a sound risk management system for all aspects of the Institute
Oversee the procurement system in the Institute in liaison with the Business Office
Custodian of quality control and asset management at IPLG
Liaise with Africa University Business Office on all financial matters concerning stakeholders
Performance of any other duties for the efficient management of the resources of IPLG as may be determined and assigned by the IPLG Director.

Qualifications and experience required
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:
A Degree in Accountancy
At least five years experience at a senior level
Ability to make decisions independently
Ability to handle pressure and to work without supervision
